Medicare defines four levels of hospice care. Pacific Hospice provides all four — ensuring the right level of support is always available to meet your family's needs.
The most common level of hospice care
Routine Home Care
Routine Home Care is the foundation of hospice services and the level most patients receive. Care is provided in the patient's home — whether that's a private residence, assisted living facility, or residential care home — on a regular, scheduled basis.
What's Included:
- Regular nursing visits for assessment and symptom management
- Certified nursing aide visits for personal care and hygiene
- Medications related to the terminal diagnosis
- Medical equipment and supplies (hospital bed, wheelchair, oxygen, etc.)
- Social work services and care coordination
- Chaplain and spiritual care visits
- Volunteer support and companionship
- Bereavement support for the family
Intensive support during a medical crisis
Continuous Home Care
Continuous Home Care is provided during periods of medical crisis when a patient requires intensive nursing care to manage acute symptoms. This level of care is designed to keep the patient at home and avoid unnecessary hospitalization.
What's Included:
- Continuous nursing care for 8 to 24 hours per day during a crisis
- Skilled nursing management of acute pain or distressing symptoms
- Monitoring and adjustment of medications
- Close coordination with the hospice physician
- Support and guidance for family caregivers during the crisis
Short-term inpatient care for complex needs
General Inpatient Care
General Inpatient Care is provided in a Medicare-approved inpatient facility — such as a hospital or skilled nursing facility — when a patient's pain or symptoms cannot be adequately managed at home. This is a short-term level of care intended to stabilize the patient so they can return home.
What's Included:
- Around-the-clock nursing care in an inpatient setting
- Intensive pain and symptom management
- Physician oversight and medication adjustment
- Continued emotional and spiritual support
- Family support and education during the inpatient stay
- Transition planning to return to home care when stable
Relief and rest for family caregivers
Respite Care
Respite Care provides temporary inpatient care for the patient in order to give primary family caregivers a planned break. Caring for a loved one at end of life is deeply meaningful — but it is also physically and emotionally demanding. Respite care allows caregivers to rest, recharge, and care for themselves.
What's Included:
- Up to 5 consecutive days of inpatient care per respite period
- Care provided in a Medicare-approved facility
- All hospice services continue during the respite stay
- Transportation provided to and from the respite facility
- Flexible scheduling to meet the family's needs
- Peace of mind knowing your loved one is in compassionate hands
Coverage & Payment
How Pacific Hospice Is Covered
Pacific Hospice accepts Medicare Part A — one of the most comprehensive benefits available to hospice patients. Most families pay little or nothing out of pocket.
Medicare Part A
Pacific Hospice accepts Medicare Part A, which covers all hospice-related services — including nursing visits, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, medical equipment, and aide services.

Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Pacific Hospice provides all four Medicare-defined levels of care: Routine Home Care, Continuous Home Care, General Inpatient Care, and Respite Care.
